Built on the banks of the Anton River, the Town Mills revives the heritage of Andover! The busy market town of Andover, with its attractive high street and narrow walkways in Test Valley, dates back to the Saxon period. Many of the town’s buildings reflect its position as a big stopover place for coaches travelling between London, Southampton and Oxford in the 18th century.
Andover’ was recorded as belonging to the King, William the Conqueror, in the Domesday Book in 1086, and the town had six mills all powered by the Anton River. The only one that survives today is the Town Mills.
Charges at’ La Tunmulle ‘ included the mine, weir and leet and millstones charges in the 13th century. The current building of the factory dates back to 1764. Nearly 200 years later the plant was rebuilt and for another 10 years, it managed to grind rice. The house was turned into a bar after the factory was shut.
The area became the host of a bar, party and cafe over the following years. The Town Mills has been a popular Wadworths-owned bar since 2001. The Town Mills, with its mill wheel still intact and the river running through the pub, is one of very few pubs in the country. When you arrive, gaze through the viewing window and the ancient history of Andover with the River Anton under your foot is introduced to you.
The mill wheel, 2.59 meters in length, maintains the original wheel’s layout faithfully. The work was done by craftsmen from Andover and all the products were produced locally.
Today, the public house in Town Mills offers traditional real aes and all the usual favourites stocked. A fantastic menu features home-cooked food and is accessible all day and all night long. For Mondays, the bar also sells a three-meat carvery.
The Town Mills is not to be called a small bar with a capability 240 guests and a cafe table to distribute 120 covers during the night.
There are plenty of seating areas throughout the bar, spread out over two levels. You can appreciate the vibrant bar area, soak up the garden environment with the past flowing river Anton, and come upstairs to relax in the unique room. Andover’s Town Mills, steeped in history, is a must-see for everyone. Come and visit this busy market town’s cool, family bar.
They also provide a wonderful private dining space, function room and business meeting room with free WiFi and waitress service at no cost and if you need a party room where you can celebrate the children’s birthdays with food and entertainment provided, (they also do the cleaning up)
